Position Overview

Primary responsibility is to ensure Regions meet the company’s goal in customer service, equipment utilization, fleet services, profitability and employee/driver satisfaction while effectively managing cost and down-time. The Regional Maintenance Manager will oversee our preventative and general equipment maintenance program to our established standards and will provide leadership to each fleet maintenance facility in the field region locations. Key accountability will be management of outside vendor, maintenance providers and dedicated contract maintenance.

Position responsibilities include:

Direct oversite for $10MM in spend, 3 C&S Shops, 1,200 trailers, 200 tractors, 40 technicians

Support CA, HI, TX (other areas) asset needs, productivity accountability and initiatives

3 party maintenance account responsibilities

Manage purchased maintenance contracts and suppliers

OE reliability New equipment quality metrics

Bay analysis Staffing model

New employee orientation (NEO) Projects related management

Job Description

  • Ensure execution of proper mechanical procedures, methods, tools, and techniques necessary to affect proper maintenance and repairs.Support CA, HI, TX (other areas as required) asset needs, productivity accountability and initiatives.

  • Responsibility and management of multiple maintenance facilities currently outsourced OE reliability and new equipment quality metrics.Ownership and facilitation of suppler QBRs and design enhancements for fleet assets.

  • Focus on performance indicators/ dashboard and create tactical action areas of improvement and outline the approach for sustained performance.

  • Create, rollout and implement new tactics and long term productivity initiatives.

  • Support projects related management and reliability related issues and ad hoc related needs throughout the network.

  • PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION MAKING:Typical problems and decisions made (give detailed examples):1. Problem Solving:This role will work closely with Westcoast leadership to ensure equipment needs are met or exceed region expectation. Working as a liaison between Trans Ops / Drivers and performance of assets, trailers, reefers, tractors. Bringing the appropriate support to remove obstacles, enhance process or bring safer solution to the organization. Tactics would include working with OEMs at the national level, identify complaint, cause, correction and replicating (when applicable) across our varied fleet of 1,100 power units and 7,000 trailers. Example: This position will negotiate with trailer manufacture to repair trailer floors with minimal impact to operations. Negotiations include securing suitable rentals / lease units provided for by OE. (while this is primarily a west region issue, the need across other regions will increase) Other items include pulling information and data from existing trailer assets to build, support and strengthen C&S’ long term Asset Replacement Strategy. Regular problem solving will include tradeoff decisions with ensuring operational needs are met and balancing asset repair and replacements. As the sensitivity to meeting service requirements for key west coast customers increases the demands for solid asset support will continue to be important and a focal area. With consistent, predictable corporate asset replacement strategy, strong support is needed to ensure build quality, material consistency and component compatibility. Candidate will have to distinguish between quality expectations vs. finished asset and no / no go decisions on deployment of assets to the field. Problem solving will translate into engagement to proper partners, suppliers and experts to validate contract specifications, integrity and partnership value. Upcoming activities include 400 tractor purchase agreement and 300 reefer trailers + another 400 the following year. 2. Decision Making Decision making in this position is both predictable and time constrained based on the needs of the operations. Examples include making repair decision ≥ $25K related to rebuild options for transmissions, reefers and tractor engines. Others include tradeoff decisions like executing in-house repairs vs. farming out to outside vendor while balancing shop workload, technical competencies and meeting internal customer service requirements. Decision making example includes the blending, coordination and responsibility of multiple component manufactures on trailers of refrigeration unit, lift-gate manufacture, suspensions, lighting and brake system suppliers. Ongoing standards compliance, end user quality feedback and overall performance will be decided by the candidate and ad hoc changes and intervention needs to be evaluated and modified if needed. While this level of involvement should not have to take place . . . the reality of this industry is the finished and consistent quality lacks and fleet involvement is necessary to ensure compliance. Ability to scope and initiate new garage/shop openings and have exposure and understand the operation of fleet garage for profit or for 3rd party fleet(s).
