Position Overview

The Sr. Director, Category Management will oversee the strategic development, planning, execution and financial performance for assigned perishable categories throughout the company. The role will interact directly with vendors and suppliers to build relationships and negotiate best-in-class deals for the company and our customers. Serve as subject matter expert in the development/management of several categories to achieve organizational goals by implementing category strategies, leveraging scale, building strategic supplier relationships and financial growth.

Job Description

Strategy Implementation/Plan of Action

  • Set goals and strategic direction for the business, ensuring alignment with broader business goals and vision

  • Drive strategic negotiations with external vendors

  • Build long term strategic relationships with suppliers and manufacturers

  • Execute category planning process for perishable categories of responsibility, including development and implementation of category plans; leveraging insights in order to formulate key strategies and category initiatives supporting strategies

  • Insure category strategies are within Private Brands and Corporate strategy/policy

  • Develop pricing strategy

  • Own the strategic Product Assortment direction and guidelines for assigned categories

  • Develop annual category plans which include current situation analysis, vision/strategy, specific category plans & budgets

Oversight & Execution

  • Generate and implement significant ideas to drive business improvements, innovation, and scale within the category and across the Retail business.

  • Lead cross functional collaboration on necessary systems and processes to support business needs, including retail systems, site merchandising and in-stock

  • Identify industry trends relevant to customer selection and experience

  • Collaborate on Sales, Marketing and Merchandising initiatives

  • Innovate and implement new customer and vendor programs

  • Share market intelligence, best practices and provide category expertise to improve cost, drive efficiencies and minimize potential supply chain risks

  • Provide direction/management of all assigned categories in the areas of price administration and documentation, contract administration, supply assurance and supplier evaluation

  • Proactively assess and manage commodity market risk to the organization

  • Negotiate terms & conditions consistent with corporate objectives, standards and ethics, while delivering best overall value

  • Perform ongoing analytics including internal data mining, in-depth category analysis and cost of goods comparisons against internal and external industry benchmarks

  • Ensure suppliers meet required service levels, product quality measures and end-user satisfaction

  • Manage, improve and recommend the product assortment for each of the C&S owned private brands

  • Perform SKU rationalization of categories and work with suppliers to continually offer the right assortment to customers

  • Collaborate with Category Merchandising to validate assortment and ensure best placement in POG’s

  • Manage product development process for assigned categories

  • Meet with customers to understand perspectives on product, placement, price and promotion from the customers and their shoppers

  • Work with Marketing Department or Advertising/Promotions for assigned category

  • Work with Merchandising/Buying group to forecast product supply as needed and provide information to suppliers or other relevant parties.

Vendor Management

  • Drive supplier relationship management and manage a supplier network that maintains uninterrupted supply and safety of contracted products at competitive cost

  • Identify leverage opportunities and interact with procurement to negotiate contracts, supply agreements and/or programs to achieve the lowest possible acquisition costs (cost of goods) for products

  • Identify new suppliers to distribute products and work with Merchandising, Transportation and warehousing to negotiate quality expectations, reduce product costs, etc. with supplier at the senior management level

  • Review solicitations from potential suppliers to determine if potential product and relationship is beneficial for the company

  • Work with suppliers and/or other SEI managers to stabilize product supply through forecasting key products and working with Buying and Transportation to solve issues

  • Review and work with Buying & Transportation groups and manufacturers to resolve out-of-stock issues

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with representatives and senior management of suppliers

Financial Management

  • Manage a full P&L, including planning, forecasting and driving growth for the category, possessing a complete understanding of internal and external variables that impact the business

  • Perform monthly verification of plans and provide explanation for variances in budgeted sales/gross profit & other metrics as well as provide projections for upcoming month

  • Negotiate buying cost and develop recommended sell costs for each distribution facility, or customer or other price plan (Hi/Lo, EDLP, etc.) as well as provide recommendations on other associated income and expense

  • Develop recommended retail pricing guidelines in conjunction with the Vice President for stores to optimize category profitability and establish suggested retail prices within these guidelines

  • Review competitor pricing information

Management, Coaching & Leadership

  • Develop team members within your area

  • Create success through development of personnel

  • Work with Vice President to develop near, mid and long term organizational structure

  • Responsible for the hiring, development and leadership of a team of category managers, assistant category managers and analysts

Qualifications:

• 15+ years of relevant senior leadership experience in food or grocery

• 10+ years of negotiation and vendor management

• 10+ years of hiring and managing teams

• 10+ years in one or more perishable categories

• Superior analytical and quantitative skills, comfortable with complex financial data

• Track record of delivering results, setting strategy and running a large volume and high profile business.

• Experienced in vendor negotiations, pricing and promotions, inventory management and product development

• Highly polished communications skills – speaking, writing, presenting and negotiating.

• High threshold for working in ambiguous, fast paced environments – figuring it out and adapting as you go.

• Ability to operate simultaneously and effectively in both tactical and strategic modes.

• Willingness to roll up your sleeves and get it done.

• Superior relational skills.

• Deep understanding of financial methodology to determine costs, develop annual business plans and oversee key daily metrics (sales, volume, inventory, costs, etc.)
