The Vice President of Transportation Operations will support and advance our multi-year, transformative transportation strategy across C&S Wholesale Grocers and is accountable for operational results, effectiveness in service, cost, safety, people and capacity across our dedicated carriers, fleet operations and third party logistics providers throughout North America. This individual will partner with key constituents to set operational goals and define strategies and tactics to accomplish. This individual will ensure that transportation planning, processes, assets and service are optimized to meet operating goals and our strategic growth plan at the lowest sustainable costs.
Accountable for execution of all inbound and outbound transportation activities (store delivery, backhaul/CPU, transfers, storage pullbacks, reverse logistics, etc.) that occur on a daily basis, leveraging all available resources in the network. Ensure utilization of the best possible resources to provide the highest probability of service and lowest cost/highest NET margin to the organization. Overall activity encompasses on average; 30,000 deliveries and 2,500 managed inbound loads covering more than 3,000,000 miles, $12MM of gross expense, $5M of gross customer fees and fuel surcharge on a weekly basis. On average, $2M of gross CPU revenue, for an overall NET profit inbound program of $50M per year
Create appropriate budget metrics, expenses, and revenue estimates. Develop and implement detailed process to achieve or beat budgeted key performance metrics- service and costs. Lead initiatives to improve transportation services in the areas of quality, speed to market, reliability, execution to plan, costs to serve and overall customer service. Effectively collaborate across supply chain to optimize on time performance, inventory levels, and costs.
Continually improve upon the utilization of standard operating procedures and metrics to achieve business results and to drive all aspects of transportation across the enterprise, including but not limited to; private fleet and dedicated carrier operational standardization and optimization, order to delivery logic that is efficient and obtainable, high quality driver training and onboarding, safety and compliance to our drivers and communities, fleet and 3rd party carrier utilization for the nationwide inbound program and excellent customer service. Ensures that each region and facility operate in compliance with the C&S way techniques for transportation operations, standardized operating practices, cost management, while adhering to the company's mission, vision, and values statements.
Build and maintain strong relationship with all major customers. Participate in store visits, customer meetings, transportation summits, and other engagements to understand customer needs and how the Transportation operation can drive value.
Partner with Sr. leadership team to develop and lead transportation business strategy for all Customers served. Develop initiatives with senior leadership to improve service to our Customers, cost performance, and profitability. Support all strategies, budgets and execution of load fee/stop fee/fuel surcharge activity. Ensure commercial and finance partners are aligned and all processes and reporting are setup for success. Participate in cost change/rate adjustments as needed with customers. Be the voice of transportation for the organization, including but not limited to customer engagement, Project 2025 initiatives, and overall strategic activities.
Successfully support the roll out and utilization of the nationwide transportation management solution (Manhattan TMS). Ensure the company's investment in TMS produces the stated ROI by ensuring employees are trained on the new technology, projects are developed that support business objectives, and new functionality is implemented to enable improved processes. Execute proper change management throughout the implementation.
Design the right structure to support the business and deploy and develop the right talent to ensure achievement of organizational objectives. Partner with HR to ensure that the right processes are in place for development plans and succession planning.
10+ years progressive responsibility within the distribution or logistics discipline, combined with proven transportation leadership experience.
Experience with all aspects of complex transportation operations start-ups.
Change management experience and communication skills, particularly interpersonal, in complex large organizations. Matrix organization experience preferred.
Interpersonal competencies including integrity and trust, adaptability, leadership, ability to motivate, coaching and mentoring.
Ability to effectively collaborate and drive results across a complex large organization.
Strategic thinker with ability to translate strategy into an executable plan. Strong problem solving skills. Strong project management expertise, from ideation to execution and follow-up.

Demonstrated experience in building strategic and operational plans that deliver results over multiple cycles. Strong analytic and financial acumen, demonstrated experience in budgeting, extensive P&L Management experience
Business and intellectual competencies including; industry knowledge and understanding, strategic and tactical planning, warehousing and logistics, problem analysis, written and oral communication, people development, visioning and creativity.
Creative with a strategic mindset along with the ability to turn concepts into action. Embodies a culture of taking smart risks and innovating to win.
BS in any of the following disciplines; logistics, distribution, engineering, industrial management, and finance.
Knowledge of transportation policy and law (state and federal), plus knowledge of transportation technologies, and telematics systems.
